American Disposal Services (ADS) provides one covered trash bin and one recycling bin per residence. Each resident receives one of each upon moving in, and these totes remain with the home if sold. It's advised to record the serial number for future identification. Additional recycling bins and totes can be requested by calling 703-368-0500.
Recycling
ADS offers a weekly curbside recycling program, collecting various materials including aluminum cans, plastics (#1-7), paper, and cardboard each Thursday. Glass can be recycled at a local center. Key requirements for recycling include:
- Bundle newspapers and magazines in paper bags or tie with twine.
- Rinse plastic, aluminum, and metal containers before placing them in appropriate bags or bins.
- DO NOT use plastic bags, as they contaminate recyclables - they will not be picked up as recycling.
- Place items at the curb by 6 am for collection, and recyclables can be comingled.
Yard Waste
ADS collects yard waste every Monday at the curb. Important guidelines include:
- No plastic bags; use paper bags or marked bins.
- Grass clippings and leaves should be bagged or in a can.
- Brush and limbs must be bundled, with limbs not exceeding four feet long and three inches in diameter.
- Concrete, bricks, dirt, and soil are not accepted.
- Yard waste must be at the curb by 6 am.
- Limit of 50 pounds per bag/container and 10 bags per collection.
Bulk Pickups
ADS collects furniture, non-CFC appliances (excluding refrigerators and freezers), and large non-metal household items. A fee applies for kitchen items, certain appliances, and construction debris. Schedule collection at least 24 hours in advance by scheduling online here or contacting ADS at 703-368-0500 before putting out bulk items.

The Loudoun Compost Initiative
The Loudoun Compost Initiative, led by Monica Goswami, is a community project focused on reducing waste and promoting sustainable living through composting. It empowers residents to convert organic waste into compost, enriching local soils and reducing landfill use. Workshops and resources at the local library educate participants on composting benefits and practices while fostering collaboration among the community. The initiative aims to inspire a culture of sustainability beyond composting.

Snow Removal
As a reminder, public roads are maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
Cascades Community Association (CCA) is responsible for the clearing of snow from private streets, sidewalks, and trails. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for all VDOT owned streets. Please note in the event of snow / freezing rain / ice the management staff may not be able to make it into the office.
Don't know if your street is managed by Cascades or VDOT? Click here to find out!
Cascades (CCA) Managed Streets
Snow operations begin after two inches of snow on paved surfaces or at the Association's discretion. Salt brine will be applied to CCA streets, depending on the forecasted storm and salt will be used after plowing. Expect 10 hours for every 6 inches of snow cleared. Main roadways are prioritized, followed by private streets and parking areas. The contractor aims for curb-to-curb plowing to allow at least two lanes of traffic. Residents are encouraged to park in garages or driveways to facilitate snow removal.
Snow Accumulation Guidelines for Driveways:
- Contractors are not responsible for snow removal in front of driveways or around parked cars.
- Snow will accumulate next to street-parked cars during plowing.
- Snow should be shoveled onto grass-covered common areas or private property.
- Residents must clear sidewalks in front of their homes; CCA will manage some community sidewalks and trails.
- CCA will assist in removing large snowdrifts at main intersections.
- For storms exceeding eight inches, updates on snow removal will be shared via TownSq, social media, and email.
VDOT Managed Streets
VDOT ensures all state-maintained roads are passable within 48 hours after winter storms. Residents in Northern Virginia can check their neighborhood's plowing status. The road clearing priority is as follows:
- Interstates and primary roads
- Snow emergency routes and heavily trafficked roads
- Secondary roads and residential streets
Residents must clear their sidewalks. During heavy snowfall, plowing may push snow into gutters or block driveways. VDOT advises shoveling snow to the right of your driveway to avoid re-accumulation. If parking is unavailable in your driveway, consider parking on the odd-numbered side of the street to allow plows to clear a wider lane.
